Become a Pollworker

The right to vote is one of our nation's oldest and most important entitlements, and with this right comes responsibility. Free and open elections are the basis on which this country was formed and you can make a difference by becoming a poll worker to help protect those freedoms.

Because of COVID-19, New York is experiencing a critical shortage of poll workers. Historically, 55 percent of all New York’s poll workers are over the age of 60, making them especially vulnerable to the pandemic. This has resulted in a significant need for poll workers who are willing and able to assist with the administration of in-person voting during all elections.

What tasks will you perform as a poll worker?

  • Prepare the polling place for voting
  • Set up the voting equipment
  • Sign-in and process voters
  • Enforce social distancing
  • Demonstrate voting procedures to the voters
  • Sanitize voting equipment
  • Close the polling place
  • Canvass and report the results
  • Assist voter if requested

Election Inspectors

Onondaga County Board of Elections—Election Inspectors

Election Inspectors

Onondaga County Board of Elections

Onondaga County Board of Elections needs Election Inspectors!

Election Inspectors are paid $224 to work in the Primaries and General Elections. The required working hours are from approximately 5:00AM to 9:30 PM. It is recommended that you be registered in either the Democratic or Republican party, however, we are training all voters who wish to be election inspectors, as we have limited spots available for those who are registered in other parties. You must be able to speak, read and write English, (bilingual inspectors, especially Spanish speakers, are very welcome) and you must be available to work the day of the election.

As an Election Inspector you will be required to complete a 3.5-hour class on the processes and procedures related to being an inspector, followed by a mandatory written test. Persons who successfully complete the test will be paid an hourly rate. Class is an annual requirement.
