Early mail ballot

"You can vote by mail using an early mail ballot, a paper form you fill out and return to your board of elections.

You do not need an excuse to vote by early mail ballot.

Want help? You can have someone else deliver your application to your local board of elections and bring your ballot to you. Be sure to write the name of that person in the appropriate box on the form.

No matter which option you choose, pay attention to the deadlines.

Casting an Early Mail Ballot

Your ballot package contains:

  • An early mail ballot
  • A security envelope
  • A pre-paid return envelope with an "Official Election Mail" logo and the address of your local board of elections.

To complete your ballot:

  1. Mark your ballot, following the instructions. 
  2. Fold the ballot and place it into the security envelope.
  3. Sign, date, and seal the security envelope.
  4. Put the ballot into the return envelope.
  5. Seal the return envelope.

To return your ballot, you can:

  • Mail your ballot. Your ballot must be postmarked no later than Election Day and received by your local board of elections no more than a week after Election Day. Mail it early! Postage is  included!
  • Drop off your ballot during the early voting period. Bring your ballot to an early voting poll site in your county during the early voting period.
  • Drop off your ballot on Election Day. Drop off your ballot at your local board of elections or to an Election Day poll site in your county.

"How to Cast an Early Mail Ballot
  1. Once your receive the ballot, mark the ballot according to your choices for each office following the instructions on the ballot.
  2. Once you have completed marking your ballot fold it up and place it in the Security Envelope. (This envelope will have a place for your signature.)
  3. Sign and date the outside of the Security Envelope.
  4. Seal the Security Envelope.
  5. All early mail ballots include a pre-paid Return Envelope. Place the Security Envelope in the Return Envelope. (This envelope will have the return address of your county Board of Elections on the outside and should have a logo that reads, “Official Election Mail”.) The Return Envelope does not require any additional postage.
  6. Seal the Return Envelope.

Voters can track their early mail ballot via the Board of Elections' Poll Site Search, Voter Registration, and Mail Ballot Tracker available at https://voterlookup.elections.ny.gov/


You may return the ballot in any of the following ways:

For the November 4, 2025 General Election:

  1. Put it in the mail ensuring it receives a postmark no later than November 4th. Must be received by the County Board of Elections no later than November 12th.
  2. Bringing it to your County Board of Elections Office no later than November 4th by 9pm.
  3. Bringing it to an early voting poll site in your county between October 25th and November 2nd.
  4. Bringing it to a poll site in your county on November 4th by 9pm." (New York State Board of Elections)

What is Early Voting?
  • Voters can vote in-person before Election Day. Voters registered in Onondaga County will be able to vote at any early voting site. If you vote during the early voting period, you are not eligible to vote on Election Day.
Who can vote early?
  • For the 2025 Primary Election, only voters registered with a political party having a primary within their city or town in Onondaga County will be able to vote at any early voting site. Some towns may not have a primary.

How will I vote during early voting?
  • The voting process is the same as voting on Election Day. When you get to the early voting center, you will check in to vote, receive your ballot and cast your voted ballot in the Clear Ballot voting machine.
  • You may ask for assistance in the voting process.

When will early voting results be posted?
  • Early voting votes will be canvassed and reported after 9:00 PM on Election Day.

Early voting allows you to vote in person before Election Day. Learn where to get more details about early voting in your state.

Sometimes circumstances make it hard or impossible for you to vote on Election Day. But most states let you vote in person during a designated early voting period.

Use this chart to see if your state allows early voting in person.

  • In most states, you do not need an excuse to vote early.
  • In some states, you may need to request an absentee ballot to be able to vote early.

Check with your state or local election office for early voting dates and rules in your area. Depending on your state, you may need to check under "absentee voting" if you do not see information listed for early voting.

Early Voting (in person)

"Early Voting Starts: 10 days before Election Day 
Early Voting Ends: 2 days before Election Day

Early voting begins 10 days before the election and continues through two days before the election (there is no in-person voting the day before Election Day). Many counties have multiple voting sites available. Each voting site has different hours, so check here to determine the best voting site for you.

In NYC, voters must go to the early voting poll site based on their address. Find the early voting poll site for NYC voters here.

Early Mail Ballot


Any registered voter in New York can apply for an early mail ballot without having to provide a reason. The application for an early mail ballot must be received at least 15 days prior to the election. If you wish to vote by mail before the election day, you may apply for an early mail ballot using any of the following methods:
