Equity: We define Equity as an approach that ensures everyone access to the same opportunities. Equity recognizes that advantages and barriers exist. Equity is a process that begins by acknowledging that unequal starting place and makes a commitment to correct and address the imbalance.

Inclusion: Inclusion is a universal human right and its objective is to accept, welcome and embrace all people irrespective of race, gender, disability, medical or other need. Inclusion consists of the efforts and practices to ensure groups or individuals with different backgrounds are culturally and socially accepted, and treated equally.” (from Inclusion Action in Ontario)
Terms Often Associated with DEI
This list of terms is not exhaustive, as there are many other terms and identities that may apply. To keep the information clear and manageable, only a selection of terms has been included. We acknowledge and respect the diversity and complexity of experiences beyond what is listed here.
Accessibility means making sure everyone, no matter their abilities or experiences, can fully participate and have equal opportunities. It's about creating spaces and experiences that welcome and include everyone. Learn More
Digital Equity means a condition in which all individuals and communities have the information technology capacity needed for full participation in our society, democracy, and economy. Gender: One's innermost concept of self as male, female, a blend of both or neither – how individuals perceive themselves and what they call themselves. One's gender identity can be the same or different from their sex assigned at birth.(Human Rights Campaign) Find Out More
LGBTQIA+ is an acronym that brings together many different gender and sexual identities across society. The acronym stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, intersex, asexual, and the + holds space for the expanding and new understanding of different parts of the very diverse gender and sexual identities. Neurodiversity encompasses differences in brain structure, chemistry, and functioning that result in cognitive, sensory perception, emotional, and mental health differences among people. Race/Ethnicity: Race is subjectively determined and based on physical characteristics that are commonly associated with a particular group of individuals. Ethnicity is commonly linked to cultural expression and identity. (Most Policy Initiative)
Sexuality: An inherent or immutable enduring emotional, romantic or sexual attraction to other people. An individual’s sexual orientation is independent of their gender identity. (Human Rights Campaign) Additional Resources
